The Ultimate Checklist: Planning Your Glass Balustrade Project

Don't start your renovation without these essential steps. At Glass Balustrades Ireland, we want your DIY project to be stress-free and spectacular. Use this checklist to stay on track.

Phase 1: The Planning

  • Check Building Regs: Confirm required heights (900mm for stairs/internal, 1100mm for external).

  • Identify the Substrate: Are you fixing into concrete, steel, or solid timber? (Ensure timber joists are at least 100mm x 100mm).

  • Choose Your Style: Frameless for the view, or Post & Rail for a classic DIY-friendly install?

  • Confirm Finish: If you’re near the coast, ensure you’ve selected Grade 316 Stainless Steel to prevent tea-staining.

Phase 2: The Measurement

  • Final Floors Only: Ensure all tiling, decking, or flooring is 100% finished before measuring.

  • Double-Check Totals: Measure the full length of the run, then subtract for posts and expansion gaps (10mm–20mm).

Phase 3: The Order

  • Confirm Glass Type: Standard toughened or laminated for extra-high balconies?

  • Fixings & Tools: Do you have the right drill bits (SDS for concrete, high-speed for steel)?

  • Access Check: Does the delivery truck have clear access to your property? Large glass crates can be heavy!

Phase 4: The Installation

  • Safety Gear: Do you have glass suction cups and heavy-duty gloves? (Never handle large panels alone).

  • Dry Fit: Position your posts and hardware before drilling to ensure the layout looks correct.

  • Level, Level, Level: Check every post and panel with a spirit level before the final tightening.
